Dionne had a pot in her garden with some green leaves sprouting.
So wanting to encourage growth in her garden, she fed and watered in and watched it thrive.
As it grew bigger, she decided to do a little research and find out what it actually is.
She discovered she had actually been caring for a fireweed for months.
According to the Royal Horticultural Society, the rosebay willowherb, is ‘a native perennial weed which spreads by seed and rhizomes (underground stems) and is unsuitable in a small garden. It is found growing on wasteland, scrub, rocks, woodland and also gardens where it can become a serious weed.’
The problem is that it produces deep pinkish purple flowers, which look nice but they are fluffy and spread easily, meaning it can take over the whole garden.
Dionne said that she’d decided to keep it even though she feels a little silly.
Posting in the Gardening On A Budget Official group, she said: ‘Might as well post this. Give you all a good laugh.
‘I’ve been watering and feeding this pot for months, well since last year. And I’ve just realised. It’s a WEED.
‘But I’ve done some research n it does have pretty purple flowers so I’m keeping it#boydoifeelsilly’
The post had over 2,500 likes and she later added that she had named the weed Wendy and was happy that she’s made people smile.
Lots of people commented to tell her that if she liked it, she should do what she wants with it.
One said: ‘A weed is only a flower growing in the wrong place.’
‘I have these in a few pots. Might be a weed but that just means it’s an unwanted plant and in the wrong place. To me it is vital greenery in my concrete yard for me and the bees. When they flower they are very pretty,’ another added.
